Come join us for a slide-show by the author, a dialogue with Prof. Travis Kong, and a glass of Belgian beer, in one of Hong Kong’s most delightful bookstores.
Wandering Dolls: COSPLAY Journey across East Asia is Belgian scholar Katrien Jacobs’ journey of discovery into the popular cultures and ACG subcultures of East Asia, Including chapters focusing on Kyoto, Hong Kong, Beijing, and Bandung. Ms Jacobs playfully embedded herself into the activities of a diverse grouping of gendered characters, radical and status-quo cosplayers, doll players, cross-dressers, and the convention-going mob of average ACG fans.
The bilingual, Chinese/English text, published by Roundtable Books in Hong Kong, also includes an extensive selection of color photography taken on these journeys by Ms. Jacobs and a wide range of professional and amateur photographers. Thus the book is at once a travelogue, an ethnographic study, and an artistic narrative that obscures the boundaries between author and subject, the investigator and the investigated.
On Friday October 28, 2011, at 7pm ACO Books in Wan Chai will present Ms. Jacobs, who will show and discuss a selection of images from the book, and Travis Kong, writer of the book’s introduction, who will conduct a brief interview with Ms Jacobs and then moderate question from the audience. The event is free and open to the public.
